Transitions

We have been anticipating two big transitions this fall. First, Joel should be rolling off the project he has been working on for over a year, but they keep extending his time in California. So, we will continue to anticipate that change. For those of you wondering his official roll off date has been extended until October 30.

The second, I started graduate school this fall. I am working on Masters in Library and Information Science (MLIS) at San Jose State University (SJSU). You say, "Wait a minute, are the Rech's moving to California? I thought Joel was just working there temporarily!" Not to worry, we are not moving to California. SJSU's MLIS program is completely online. I will be able to take classes from anywhere. All I need is a high speed Internet connection and a working computer where I can login. As of this weekend Joel has gotten my MacBook in tiptop shape for my semester. So, really I just need a Internet connection!

This morning I was reading for class and came across the Five Laws of Librarianship in a reading titled, "How to Think Like Librarian", in one of my textbooks The Portable MLIS. I am not sure if I've ever heard of these laws before, but they make sense and help to explain why I am continuing my education to become a professional librarian.
The Five Laws of Librarianship by Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan, 1931

  1. Books are for use.

  2. Books are for all.

  3. Every book its reader.

  4. Save the time of the reader.

  5. The library is a growing organism.

I believe these to be true and look forward being that kind of librarian.

As for transitions, please bear with me as I figure out how to balance my work life, home life, school life and social life. If I say no, it isn't because I don't want to it is probably because I haven't figured out yet how to manage my time effectively!
